Jacksonville city councilman pushing to roll out Waymo; Safety analysts have some concerns

Jacksonville City Councilman Rory Diamond is advocating for the introduction of Waymo to the city, arguing it could save millions in transportation costs and improve road safety. However, safety experts have raised concerns about incidents involving autonomous vehicles in other states, including in Phoenix where a Waymo vehicle was filmed driving towards an approaching train. While cities maintain authority over local roadway management, the regulation of autonomous vehicles falls under state jurisdiction. The proposal would replace the city’s NAVI program with autonomous alternatives, which Diamond argues would offer significant cost savings.
