Councilman Lincoln Restler has proposed that removing lanes from cars could create more pedestrian street areas in New York City. Critics argue this will create additional congestion and will exacerbate existing problems. Critics suggest targeting the 100,000 for-hire vehicles (Ubers and Lyfts), which are the biggest cause of Midtown, midweek, midday congestion. Critics also argue that widening sidewalks would be better than building structures in the street. Lucius Riccio, former NYC DOT commissioner and former MTA Board member, suggests that instead of increasing congestion pricing, target corporate Uber and Lyft companies responsible for the current congestion. He suggests auctioning off permits for FHVs to operate in Midtown and suggests that they should use this money for open spaces, more subways or free buses.
