Experts have revealed that the deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius began before the cruise set sail. A Dutch couple may have been exposed to the virus during a birdwatching trip near a landfill in Argentina, where they may have had contact with mice or rats. The outbreak, which began in southern Argentina, is now the government's leading hypothesis. The remaining passengers and crew members are being evacuated to the Canary Islands, where officials are preparing to receive about 140 passengers. The United States is sending a plane to bring home the 17 Americans remaining on board. So far, three people have died and no current symptoms have been reported.
