Gov. Mikie Sherrill and Assemblywoman Andrea Katz (D-Burlington) have announced a package of bills aimed at protecting children from harmful content online and holding big technology companies accountable. The announcement was made at Cherokee High School in Burlington County, a school district that has placed a significant emphasis on students' mental health. The bills include a bill sponsored by Katz and state Sen. Raj Mukherji called Kids Code that would establish privacy and safety standards for children online, force social media platforms to place prominent warnings about content that could harm mental health and create a social media research center at a New Jersey public university. Sherrill's safety agenda includes an age-appropriate design code to promote health, privacy and security over deceptive design tricks.
