The US government is reportedly close to purchasing low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines for up to $500 million in exchange for warrants to take a potential stake in the company. This move follows President Trump's desire for someone to acquire Spirit. This is part of a trend of government intervention in public companies amid rising jet fuel prices for global carriers. Spirit plans to reduce its fleet to about one-third of its pre-bankruptcy size and retain roughly 76 to 80 aircraft by the third quarter of 2026.
