Gavin Newsom promised over one hundred mental health projects — many are still abandoned

A number of projects funded through Proposition 1, the $6.4 billion behavioral-health bond voters approved in 2024, have been delayed or abandoned, despite state officials promoting the measure as a way to quickly expand treatment capacity. Many projects, including 10 of which were supposed to open in 2025, have not yet opened. The state’s Department of Health Care Services stated that while some project timelines have shifted slightly due to permitting, site conditions, and construction pressures, including supply-chain strain from President Trump's tariffs, construction remains largely on track. The slow rollout comes as California continues to expand its broader plan to address the state's homelessness crisis.
