Former Brooklyn District Attorney Joe Hynes was wrongfully convicted and disbarred for 20 years, but after his defeat in 2013, a joint investigation led to an unsealed 133,000-page dossier detailing allegations of corruption by Hynes and kickbacks by his staff, cronyism, and political prosecutions. The allegations were published by the Daily News in 2002, leading to the voters of Brooklyn kicking Hynes to the curb. The new district attorney in Brooklyn, Ken Thompson, led to over three dozen exonerations and other prosecutors established conviction review units leading to hundreds of exonerations. Hynes agreed to pay a $40,000 fine for using his official accounts for campaign purposes, while his three allies agreed to lesser fines for turning the DA’s office into a campaign headquarters.
