U.S. Biofuels Target Could Fuel Destruction of Tropical Rainforest
Published on April 3, 2026.
President Donald Trump has announced a plan to blend the highest-ever volume of crop-based biofuels into the nation’s gasoline supply, a move claimed by the administration to boost farmers. However, some analysts and researchers argue that the plan has a flaw: The U.S. doesn't produce enough vegetable oil to meet the new blending targets, forcing it to import more foreign vegetable oil. This will lead to deforestation and increased emissions of heat-trapping carbon dioxide. The EPA estimates that the new targets will drive diesel prices higher by 30 cents per gallon this year and 36 cents in 2027. The mandate also requires a 60 percent increase in biomass-based diesel, including vegetable-based and renewable diesel, over 2025 or about 9 billion gallons.
