New research by Dr. Zhangling Chen from the Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University in China suggests that individuals who consume a certain amount of wine each day may have a lower risk of dying from heart disease than teetotalers. The study, which compared alcohol consumption to grams of pure alcohol per day and per week, found that moderate wine drinkers were at a 21% lower risk, while light consumption of beer, cider or liquor was linked to a 9% higher risk of heart disease. The researchers followed participants for an average of 13 years and found that even low to moderate intake of spirits, beer or cider is linked to higher mortality, while low tomoderate intake of wine may carry lower risk. The findings could help clarify guidance on how long-term alcohol consumption can affect the health of long-lived drinking habits. However, the study's limitations include some limitations, as alcohol intake was self-reported at the start and didn't track changes over time.
