A mayoral backed slate appears to have swept the annual Newark school board election for the 11th consecutive year, taking all three seats with full, 3-year terms, plus a single seat with one year remaining on an unexpired term. With 184 of 207 election districts reporting, Hasani Council appeared to have won his third full term, leading a Moving Newark Schools Forward slate backed by Mayor Ras J. Baraka. Council was followed by his two running mates, Quamid Childs and Mark Comesañas, who drew nearly identical vote totals of 2,675 and 2,674 respectively. The fourth running mate, Jordy Nivar, appeared to win the unexpired seat with 1,956 votes, or 47.5% of those cast for the seat, a 10.8% lead over his competitors. Turnout was 2.9% as of Tuesday night’s last tally, with 5,623 voters casting ballots out of 194,440 Newark residents.
