Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a sweeping elections bill, HB 991, which requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register. Critics argue that the legislation is unnecessary and could disenfranchise some voters, including students, married women whose current name differs from their birth certificate. The ACLU of Florida also criticized the measure, stating it could result in thousands of eligible voters being unable to vote and harm first-time voters, elderly Floridians, students, low-income and rural communities, and women who have changed their names. The lawsuit against the bill is filed by voting rights groups seeking to declare it unlawful and prevent it from being enforced.
