A family member of a 3-year-old immigrant girl, who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border with her mother, waited for her release from federal custody for five months before learning she had allegedly been sexually abused at the foster home where she was placed after her separation from her mother. The girl's father, a legal permanent resident in the United States, found out about the abuse when he turned to the courts as a last resort after five months in federal custody. The family alleges that the girl was sexually abused by an older child while in foster care. The federal government's attempts to reunite the girl with her father stalled as it couldn't make an appointment to take his fingerprints. The abuse allegations were reported to local law enforcement. The Trump administration has been targeting detained immigrant children, like this man's daughter, following new rules and procedures implemented last year and a significant increase in detention times. The total number of children in ORR's care fell by about half during this period.
