Niko Medved, in his first season as Gophers coach, has done a remarkable coaching job despite a losing overall record and a losing Big Ten record. Despite injuries to several key players, Medved has managed to cobble together a competitive team despite the team's losses and reliance on five players. Despite this, the Gophers have only one player averaging 35 minutes or more in conference games, and six teams currently reside below them in the final week of the regular season. Medved's coaching has been praised for his innovative use of zone defense, which has been effective at protecting players and disrupting offenses. The team has won three of their past four games, including a 10-point defeat at Michigan.
