The federal government has deployed scores of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to O'Hare International Airport in the midst of a partial government shutdown. The move comes as more than 50,000 TSA workers have worked without pay for over five weeks during the shutdown. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that about 75 ICE officers would be deployed to the city’s largest airport, and no agents were expected at Midway International Airport. Critics have criticized the deployment, calling it a form of intimidation and disrespect. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) has also criticized the decision, stating that the agents are not trained or certified in aviation security.
