Jan Malcolm gives grim assessment of state’s health care system

Jan Malcolm, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's senior adviser on hospitals and health systems, has stated that the state's health care system is fundamentally broken and needs to be reformed. This comes as lawmakers consider how to support Hennepin County Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center that serves large numbers of uninsured and publicly insured patients, if it does not receive a financial lifeline this year. While the HCMC issue is acute, Malcolm noted that many other hospitals are facing dire finances due to uncompensated care and changes to the health care financing “Jenga tower”. The committee also took action on the Medical Assistance Protection Act, SF 2689.
