Singapore denies Malaysian scholar entry over political activism

Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, a Malaysian scholar, was denied entry to Singapore by the country due to her radical advocacy for various causes. The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that she encouraged youths to engage in disruptive and violent actions in support of specific causes. Fakakish had been scheduled to collect her PhD degree from the National University of Singapore and perform a guest lecture on her thesis. The government has argued that rules on demonstrations are necessary to maintain peace and harmony in the country, but critics argue that they infringe on freedom of expression and civil liberties.
