Researchers from Germany and China have found that nearly 30% of the global population could face five times more frequent heat-Drought Extremes by the end of the century, according to their study. The study looked at compound hot-dry extremes, events where severe drought and intense heatwaves occur at the same time. The researchers combined data from 152 climate simulations based on eight climate models to project population growth and climate change. The research suggests that 28% of our global population will experience at least five times as many of these extremes by the century's end compared to half-century. These increases will be felt differently from region to region, with tropical nations and low-income countries expected to be particularly affected. The findings suggest that renewed commitments to the 2015 Paris Agreement and additional long-term pledges could reduce the number of people affected by these compound events by one-third.
