Asteroid 16 Psyche, a gigantic space rock roughly the size of Massachusetts, may be the core of a planet that never formed. Initial analysis suggests that it is rich in a variety of metals, leading to speculation that it could be one of the most valuable space objects for research purposes and potentially have an earthly monetary value. However, a recent study used 3D simulations to simulate impacts on Psyche’s surface using the shape and depth of craters to infer what lies beneath. The results of this study did not settle any debates, but narrowed the list of possibilities. Researchers are still seeking to know more about the porosity of the asteroid.
