Alaskan writer and professor Martin Stuefer have been reporting a difficult winter in the state of Alaska, with temperatures reaching 30 below and below zero. This winter has seen 29 different days that featured minus 40 temps or colder than the winter of 1905-06, marking only five winters since the early 1900s without a longer stretch of cherry-red woodstoves. Despite this cold weather, 2025 was warmer than the long-term average and has been described as an extreme warming trend by experts. The weather has caused water to stop coming out of the north half of Alaska due to the spruce valleys and white blanket covering north Alaska, which are known for their ability to handle cold weather.
