The effort to lethally remove a gray wolf responsible for several depredation events in Rio Blanco County has been suspended by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The wolf has been at large since August 2025 after it was determined to be responsible for at least four livestock deaths. Despite efforts to remove the wolf from the area being postponed due to wildfires, the wolf managed to kill three lambs on Aug. 16. An attempt to kill the wolf with a firearm was unsuccessful due to dense vegetation and difficult terrain. The agency implemented nonlethal conflict mitigation tools such as increased human presence, range riders, and herders, increased checks during the day and night, and opportunistic hazing using scare devices.
