A federal appeals court has halted a California law that requires visible identification for law enforcement, including immigration agents, by stating that it is likely unconstitutional. The court had previously put the law briefly on hold until it could take a closer look. The Justice Department sued California and Gov. Gavin Newsom after California's No Vigilantes Act, which mandates that non-uniformed law enforcement operating in California “must visibly display identification.” The ruling keeps enforcement halted until the court fully resolves the case, which may take months. The administration argues that the law directly regulates the federal government in violation of the Constitution's Supremacy Clause.
