Formula 1 has implemented sweeping rule changes for the 2026 season, largely due to an increased reliance on the electric side of its hybrid system. The changes have been controversial with fans and drivers, leading to a midseason shift in the rulebook. The maximum recharge rate for qualifying has been reduced from 8 megajoules (2.2 kWh) to 7 megajeules (1.9 kWh). The peak recharge power has also been increased from 250 kW to 350 kW, which will affect both qualifying and racing conditions. The hybrid system's deployment will now be limited to 350 kilos in key acceleration zones, corner exit to braking zones, and 250 kilos on all other parts of the lap. A new "low power start detection" system has been developed to detect cars with abnormally slow starts after letting out the clutch. Audi Formula 1 driver Nico Hülkenberg shares his thoughts on the changes.
