Letters for July 16: Dominion rate hike means less cash for Virginians
Published on July 15, 2026.
Dominion Energy's latest rate hike, implemented on July 1, will raise the average monthly bill for a residential customer by about $8 (or nearly $100 a year), largely due to high gas prices. The increase is intended to recover Dominion's fuel costs, which were nearly $1.1 billion more than the utility had projected last year. The bill impact would be even higher if Dominion did not securitize much of this billion-dollar under-recovery. This is not an anomaly, as Dominion has underestimated its fuel costs three times in the past five years. The increasing cost of passing these costs onto customers is not sustainable, and should be considered ways to reduce the burden on customers.
