The North Shore of Hawaii experienced a significant surge in flood waters on Friday morning, with hundreds of residents forced to evacuate due to severe flooding on the North Shore. The first evacuation alert was issued at 3:42 a.m. from Honolulu’s Department of Emergency Management, warning that severe flash flooding was imminent in Waialua and Haleʻiwa. The severity of the flooding surprised authorities who had been anticipating severe weather warnings but were prepared for a lesser storm. The Wahiawā Dam, owned by the Dole Food Co., had risen within less than 3 inches of the 84-foot evacuation level and continued to rise, despite the rising tide. The National Weather Service had forecasted severe weather earlier in the week, but did not have any understanding of the severity of that would be. The North Shore Neighborhood Board chairperson Kathleen Pahinui said she had never seen flooding like this.
