A bill in Minnesota proposes a ban on reverse location warrants, which allow police to collect data near a crime scene. The issue is raised when the U.S. Supreme Court is deciding on the constitutionality of these warrants, or whether they breach the U.,S. Constitution. Some argue that these warrants allow law enforcement to gather data on individuals at certain events, such as a protest or funeral. However, a group of bipartisan Minnesota lawmakers argue that they should be illegal except in emergency situations. The bill, proposed by Sen. Erin Maye-Quade, DFL-Apple Valley, would prohibit such warrants except in the case of a sudden emergency. The number of reverse location warrant requests in Minnesota rose from 22 to 173, a 686% increase from 2018 to 2020.
