The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners is seeking to change its role in economic policy, as the Portland area economy lags behind its peers and other metros. The county Board of Commissioner Julia Brim-Edwards and Chair Jessica Vega Pederson have hired two consulting firms to map out the county's economic position and its stimulus and development options. The firm BCT Partners and New Growth Innovation Network recommended that the county should take an active role in recruiting and retaining local business and creating a safe and livable community. The consultants also suggested that leaders should make potential changes to the county’s high tax rates and coordinate their efforts with other agencies and businesses. These recommendations come as the county prepares for a tight budget cycle, which includes massive reductions in health and community programs and potentially a potential $10.789 million shortfall in its general fund.
