Nessel challenges ICE plan as Whitmer stays quiet

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is investigating plans for a proposed ICE facility in Romulus, while Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's office has remained silent on the issue. Nessel (D) has demanded ICE halt its plans and comply with state and local laws, and filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking records related to the warehouse purchase and intended use of the property. The warehouse, which sits on federally identified floodplains, could trigger state or local permitting requirements. However, state, county and city officials have stated that neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security have coordinated with them on plans to build a detention facility there.
