Struggling N.J. hospital operator faces lawsuit over 2025 layoffs

A labor union representing former employees of Heights University Hospital in New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against the hospital and its owner, Hudson Regional Health, alleging that they violated worker protection laws when they laid off 37 employees and another 92 employees in 2025. The union alleges that the company violated the New Jersey WARN Act by not providing proper notice as required under state law. The former employees are seeking severance pay equal to one week of pay for each full year of employment, an additional four weeks’�s pay, attorneys fees, and other damages. The lawsuit comes amid ongoing controversy over the hospital's standalone ER.
