State Rep. Jeff Keicher, R-Sycamore, has proposed a state law that would mandate funding a study of Illinois universities to develop a 10-year plan focused on school accountability, sustainability, and affordability. The bill, which could be named the Fixing Illinois Higher Education Funding Act if approved by legislators, has yet to receive a vote. The proposed bill criticizes Illinois’ public university funding model for giving money to schools with declining enrollment without addressing the reasons behind these declines. Keichher suggested that college campuses could be reshaped by the proposed bill, suggesting expansion or downsizing some campuses or relocation.
